Mantua derives its name from the creek which it borders in the northeastern boundary line. It is watered by many dreams, creeks and small lakes. By 1812, there were only 16 dwellings in what is now called Mantua Village the heart of the town. Just recently fossilized skeletons of a sea dwelling animals were found in the depths of a marl pits, dating millions of years old.
